Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) on Auckland Island: Status, and effects on vegetation and nesting sea birds

摘要: This paper describes the past and present status of feral pigs on subantarctic Auckland Island, their effects island's flora fauna. It is based historical records a survey made during summer 1972–73. The originate from liberation at Port Ross in 1807. These animals thrived increased numbers, by 1880 had spread throughout island. They were numerous around 33–45 years after but declined soon after, may have died out locally. Since then pig densities northern end island remained relatively low. When high fed chiefly large‐leaved species Pleurophyllum, Stilbocarpa, Anisotome, these been virtually eliminated accessible sites; it likely that pigs’ impact nesting sea bird populations was greatest this time also.
