摘要: Cultures of the copiotrophic bacterium Micrococcus luteus were stored in spent growth medium for an extended period time following batch culture. After initial decrease, total cell counts remained constant at approximately 60 to 70% beginning storage. The level viability, as judged by plate counts, decreased less than 0.05%, while respiration and ability accumulate lipophilic cation rhodamine 123 undetectable levels. However, using penicillin pretreatment (to remove viable cells) flow cytometry monitoring both we found that least 50% cells populations 75-day-old cultures not dead but dormant. Resuscitation liquid was accompanied appearance a population larger cells, which could reduce dye 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride fluorescent formazan, similar fraction converted colony-forming, cells. We surmise dormancy may be far more common death starving microbial cultures.
