Functional and social discomfort during orthodontic treatment--effects on compliance and prediction of patients' adaptation by personality variables.

摘要: During the course of treatment orthodontic patients frequently endure a number functional complaints and are anxious about their appearance. The aims this longitudinal study were to follow progress patients' adaptation discomfort, elucidate putative relationship between type appliance worn social discomfort experienced, potential predictability by attitude evaluate effects as predictors compliance. Eighty-four undergoing either removable, functional, or fixed monitored during first 7 days rated them retrospectively 14 days, 3 6 months after insertion. most frequent impaired speech, swallowing, feeling oral constraint lack confidence in public. A significant reduction was observed 2 insertion appliance. No further differences revealed longer periods wear. had an effect on speech swallowing. Patients' expectations favourable performance appreciation dental aesthetics predictive reported There acceptance appliance, well public compliance with treatment. results highlight importance attitudes associated wear for theory practice management patients, necessity early intervention clinicians.
