Mass mortality in marine mammals: Its implications for population dynamics and genetics

摘要: The death of tens thousands common seals (Phoca vitulina) around the coast Europe in 1988 provoked wide interest popular press, but it also raised questions about importance mass mortality dynamics marine mammal populations. Here, we summarize published information on occurrence mortalities among mammals and review mathematical models that have been developed to investigate role such disasters population dynamics. We conclude may play a more important than density-dependent factors some This, combination with recent improvements our understanding structure these populations, has implications for their genetics evolution.
