摘要: Polysialic acid is a developmentally regulated component in the neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM which also occurs as capsular polysaccharide of bacteria causing meningitis. has been considered repulsive element that regulates intermolecular and intercellular adhesion. Using atomic force microscopy we unexpectedly find oligomers polysialic assemble with each other into filament bundle networks. Filaments were formed from containing 12 or more N-acetylneuraminic residues, they sensitive to sialidase digestion. The networks by acid-containing carbohydrate units N-CAM. formation bundles novel unexpected property short general represents previously unrecognized molecular interaction mechanism impacts both eukaryotic prokaryotic cell-cell adhesions.
