Nursing academics' languages of legitimation: a discourse analysis.

摘要: Abstract Aim To identify the proclaimed bases of Irish nursing academics' identities as academics and to interrogate ways in which they legitimate an academic discipline. Background Six years after pre-registration education Ireland transferred higher sector, tensions continue exist concerning status legitimacy discipline those who claim profess it. Method The languages legitimation senior were elicited deliberately argumentative conversational context characteristic many discourse analytic studies. These analysed terms four building tasks language: knowledge, politics, relationships identities. Findings are unable credibly convincingly resist representations their lacking academia. Indeed, themselves construct a fragmented field, prone colonisation subversion by plethora other discourses, including medical, management industrial relations discourses. Conclusions Senior need urgently consider how academy can reconfigure its with clinical nursing, increase intellectual autonomy, enhance internal coherence cohesiveness, strengthen epistemic power knowledge base critically evaluate past practices inform present, whether what extent should shape future.
