摘要: The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has developed and applied a landscape-scale conservation plan- ning methodology in eight priority landscapes Africa, areas we call Heartlands. foundation of the Heartland Program is planning process that been as part overall Conservation Process. This helps AWF its partners develop intervention strategies address critical threats to ecological viability these landscapes, specific biodiversity targets, whilst also working improve livelihoods local people. In applying this participatory Africa have begun document learn about benefits limitations implementation at landscape- scale with stakeholders. We draw out lessons on challenges successes from our experience. Central are merits balancing systematic science-based pragmatic approach while ad- dressing needs aspirations could be particularly useful for other large-scale efforts developing countries where objectives human inextrica- bly linked.
