摘要: Abstract Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) frequently fall short of their stated goals as marine conservation tools due to various regulatory, physical, sociocultural, and economic reasons. MPA designation, however, continues be used for perceived socioeconomic benefits adjacent communities. Local beliefs regarding ecological socio-economic outcomes often influence the public support MPAs ultimately effectiveness. This paper focuses on understanding local residents' a potential South Coast National Conservation Area (NMCA) in Newfoundland Labrador how those resident NMCA. Data were collected from 180 Burgeo residents through household survey. While 33% supported designation NMCA, 43% opposed it 26% unsure. A principal component analysis (PCA) extracted five belief constructs. regression model was examine relationships between these constructs The results indicate that development best predictors NMCA establishment. Qualitative data findings better understand relationships, with minority respondents seeing opportunities protection causes proposal. responses also revealed strong concerns about loss traditional current means livelihood. If is considered feasible will require greater shift beliefs. effective stakeholder engagement increased educational information campaigns.
