摘要: Unless sustainable development becomes much more prevalent in tropical forests, appreciable areas of unprotected forests will not survive far into the twenty-first century. Sustainable forestry must integrate forest conservation and economic development. Key ecological factors discussed here include: reproduction, natural regeneration, growth, ecosystem functions, biodiversity conservation. Four models are described: 1) Industrial timber production based on PORTICO company Costa Rica that owns manages its makes a substantive investment research. 2) Community-based using Yanesha Forestry Cooperative Peruvian Amazon as an example local empowerment over protection use forests. This Coop has processing facility enables most to be marketed, it uses innovative strip-cut management system promotes excellent regeneration native tree species. 3) nontimber products depends rights access or tenure However, information is needed harvestable levels techniques preferences move from subsistence commercial production. 4) Locally controlled nature tourism touted benign but communities receive minimal returns have little say prioritizing objectives.
