The reasons people give for taking overdoses: A further inquiry.

摘要: A representative sample of 41 cases self-poisoning was studied in depth. In each case 'reasons' for taking the overdose, both stated spontaneously and chosen from a presented list, were recorded. The commonest spontaneous reason 'wish to die'. Nearly one-third indicated some non-suicidal purpose early interview consistently denied suicidal intent subsequently. Apart intent, reasons list bore little resemblance that had been offered earlier are therefore uncertain relevance. Three psychiatric judges attributed based on common-sense criteria. Several seldom or never by them; four frequently with good agreement, i.e. communicating hostility, influencing others, relieving state mind intent. first two most chosen, 71 per cent 54 respectively. They least self-poisoners themselves. Of 23 (56 cent) subjects indicating 12 (29 judged be psychiatrists.
