摘要: Abstract Cycling infrastructure such as cycle tracks and painted bicycle lanes is critical in improving safety of existing cyclists increasing the overall mode share bicycling communities. However, implementation has been fraught with political contentiousness across North America. In this paper, we discuss how theories automobility politics around it may help explain current active transportation planning practice. We then report findings from ten key informant interviews municipal planners engineers Greater Toronto Hamilton Area, Canada, order to identify they implement cycling face opposition. find that there are four principal strategies used secure support ensure construction region: 1) piggybacking on public works projects, 2) using external grants funding, 3) pre-emptively re-routing infrastructure, 4) finding a champion. Based these findings, conclude politicization result dominance Western culture. other words, not physical presence nor its social representations, but rather automobile political, battle for (road)space against remains continue remain major policy professional challenge.
