Global Occurrence of Infant Botulism, 1976–2006

摘要: OBJECTIVE. To summarize the worldwide occurrence of reported infant (intestinal toxemia) botulism cases since first recognition disease in 1976. PATIENTS AND METHODS. We collected information on by active and passive surveillance, provision therapeutic Human Botulism Immune Globulin to suspected cases, searching medical literature. defined a case as laboratory-confirmed that occurred an ≤12 months age was not caused ingestion botulinum toxin food. RESULTS. Twenty-six countries representing 5 continents at least 1 among their residents. The United States, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, this order, largest number cases. A history honey exposure significantly more common subjects hospitalized outside States than those who were recently California. CONCLUSIONS. Most have yet botulism. This limited reporting date contrasts with known global Clostridium spores soils dust suggests may be underrecognized, underreported, or both. When bulbar palsies, hypotonia, weakness are present, physicians should consider possibility even if patient has been fed honey. Publication additional reports surveillance summaries will enhance understanding extent underrecognized disease.
