POVERTY REDUCTION THROUGH PROMOTING ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOODS: IMPLICATIONS FOR MARGINAL DRYLANDS

摘要: Land degradation has become a most pressing issue in drylands. Although crop and livestock production have been the dominant sources of income, there is an increasing realisation that alternative livelihood options need to be explored ensure both environmental economic sustainability. This paper provides systematic review strategies currently adopted for improving conditions dryland dwellers different parts world. drylands encompass vast social geographic terrain represent heterogeneous socio-economic environment, this able document some general lessons applicable rural diversifying opportunities promoting development while minimising pressure from intensive land-based activities. The concludes with discussion on how international policies can move forward fight against land helping achieve poverty reduction through investments sustainable management strategies.
