摘要: BACKGROUND Dietary factors are known risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) -- the leading cause of visual loss among persons aged > or =65 y. High-glycemic-index diets have been hypothesized as a factor AMD, but prospective data unavailable. OBJECTIVE The objective was to examine association between dietary glycemic index and 10-y incidence AMD in Blue Mountain Eye Study population. DESIGN This population-based cohort study with 3,654 participants (> =49 y) examined at baseline (1992-1994); 2,335 patients were reexamined after 5 y 1952 10 Wisconsin System used grade incident early late from retinal photographs. A food-frequency questionnaire collect information baseline, an Australian database calculate mean index. RESULTS Over y, 208 1,810 (cumulative incidence: 14.1%) developed AMD. After age, smoking, other factors, constituents adjusted for, higher associated increased comparison quartiles 1 4 [relative (RR): 1.77; 95% CI: 1.13, 2.78; P trend = 0.03]. Conversely, greater consumption cereal fiber (RR: 0.68; 0.44, 1.04; 0.05) breads cereals (predominantly lower foods such oatmeal) 0.67; 1.02; 0.03) reduced No relation observed CONCLUSIONS high-glycemic-index diet is recognized precursor sight-threatening Low-glycemic-index oatmeal may protect against
