摘要: Discharges from 11 active and abandoned mines were investigated in the Lokpaukwu-Ishiagu mining areas of Nigeria. The discharges had very high concentrations TDS, hardness, chloride, calcium, conductivity, turbidity, unacceptable levels some metals. A conservative estimate is that nearly 33 million L untreated circumneutral-alkaline drainage effluents find their way into Ivo River watershed annually, including about 710,000 kg dissolved solids 586 potentially toxic These exceed national (FEPA) international (EU, WHO, USEPA) permissible standards for domestic water use discharge aquatic sources, groundwater protection permitted substances industrial effluents. Our study also revealed wetlands serve as sinks this mine become sources continuous polluted recharge to both surface groundwater. We recommend a task force be established investigate environmental operations companies Nigeria, sites closely monitored by state agencies, host communities receive education.
