摘要: Two studies investigated upper elementary school students' informal understanding of sampling issues in the context interpreting and evaluating survey results. The specific focus was on children's evaluation methods means drawing conclusions from multiple surveys. In Study 1, 17 children were individually interviewed to categorize conceptions. 2, 110 completed paper-and-pencil tasks confirm response categories identified 1 determine prevalence a larger sample. Children evaluated focusing potential for bias, fairness, practical issues, or All used types rationales, their evaluations varied somewhat by type method (restricted, self-selected, random). affective (fairness) rationales more often contexts focused results out-of-school contexts. had difficulty detecting bias with self-selected than restricted because self-selection initially most fair (i.e., everyone chance participate). preferred stratified random simple they wanted ensure that all individuals included. When surveys, children: (1) considered quality; (2) aggregated surveys regardless (3) own opinions ignored data; (4) refused draw conclusions. Even when able identify quality (Contains 5 tables 45 references.)
