摘要: Background: The contribution of structural inequalities and societal legitimisation to violence against women, which 30% women in India survive each year, is widely accepted. There a consensus that interventions should aim change gender norms, particularly through community mobilisation. How this be done less clear. Methods: We did qualitative study large informal settlement Mumbai, an environment characterises 41% households. After reviewing the anonymised records consultations with 1653 survivors violence, we conducted 5 focus group discussions 13 individual interviews 71 men representing range age groups communities. based on fictitious biographical vignettes elicit responses develop understanding social norms. wondered whether, trying might exploit disjunction between descriptive norms (beliefs about what others actually do) injunctive think one ought do), focusing program activities evidence are changing. Results: found were relatively similar regard femininity, masculinity, need for marriage childbearing, resistance separation divorce, disapproval friendships men. Some constraints women's dress mobility relaxing, but there more substantial differences around education, control income finances, premarital sexual relationships.
