Fruit and vegetable intake among Emirati adolescents: a mixed methods study.

摘要: Background Interventions to promote healthy eating in adolescents are needed the United Arab Emirates. To design effective interventions, adolescent behaviours need be understood. Aims This study aimed describe of Dubai and factors associated with fruit vegetable intake. Methods was a sequential explanatory using mixed methods approach. Ten 34 Arabic high schools were randomly selected students grades 10-12 included. Data collected on self-reported vegetables intake, behaviours, food availability sociodemographic variables. In qualitative phase, 14 interviewed about their behaviour. Results A total 620 included: 57% boys most reported medium/high family affluence. Only 28% participants met recommended daily significantly more males than females meeting it (P < 0.01). Lunch frequently eaten meal, breakfast skipped, there levels fast soft drink consumption. Adequate intake positively increased lunch frequency, being male, parental support for eating, positive perception meals. Conclusions There significant differences habits between Emirati male female adolescents. Lunch, as main faces threats because modern working hours. The gender-specific social context may require targeted interventions achieve optimal outcomes each group.
