New trends in supermarkets procurement system in South Africa : The case of local procurement schemes from small-scale farmers by rural-based retail chain stores

摘要: In contrast to the centralised fresh produce procurement systems of South African retailers relying on preferred commercial suppliers, this paper draws an in-depth analysis innovative schemes two rural-based supermarket chain stores in Limpopo Province source vegetables locally from small-scale farmers. The objective is derive lessons guide public and private sector actors promoting greater participation producers dynamic supply chains, through exposure key drivers success factors affecting inclusion vegetable critical up-scaling and/or replication type relates operation a remote, emerging market, franchise with flexible options, farmers potential land close proximity supermarket, good communication coordination, long term commitment, technical support, interest-free farm loans diversity product among Key indicators mutually beneficial engagement are consolidated farming systems, improved income, low cost (short chain), as well fostering stores' broader community involvement strategy. Upscaling/replicating scheme would probably require external definition establishment partnerships. These should be tailored specific local conditions capacities different stakeholders.
