摘要: Background: The prevalence of neonatal oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD) in high-risk infants lower-middle-income countries is unknown. Objectives: To determine the and associated risks for OPD neonates order to allow timely intervention OPD, minimising negative outcomes. Method: A prospective cross-sectional observational study was conducted an urban hospital South Africa. Clinical feeding assessments were using Neonatal Feeding Assessment Scale with all available care. Results: sample 81 (mean chronological age = 11.7 days; standard deviation 15.6 days) had been orally 2 days approaching discharge. Fifty-two participants (64.2%) OPD. Risks likely included breech presentation, septicaemia other infections, spending more than 1 day on a warm table or incubator, neurological conditions, prenatal exposure maternal smoking, siblings mental disability, congenital disorders, preterm birth (< 37 weeks), low weight 2500 g), retinopathy prematurity. Conclusion: An unexpected high found already deemed ready oral Timely early involvement Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs) decision-making about readiness may prevent serious complications Findings inform African clinicians. provides motivation from SLTs before infant mother are discharged care dispersed communities where services be scarce.
