The context of agonistic encounters is investigated. success initiated and defensive pecking analyzed. Two classes encounter-context are under discussion. approaching bird chases off the approached or reverse. In feeding winter-flocks Junco hyemalis in field first class predominates. This suggests that some individuals (dominants) use others (subordinates) as food-finders. White-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) employ same strategy with juncos “truffle-pigs”. conceptions dominance sponging should be kept apart, unless we know something about social structure aggregation.
