The objective was provide the first quantitative data a variety of sites on country that had unknown but potentially high populations. method used census nests along strip transects. A total 401.0 km transects sampled four different study areas. overall density calculated for all 0.4 nesting gorillas/km2. highest density, 1.2 gorillas/km2, found vast Likouala swamp area north central Congo. two showed low densities 0.1 0.2 respectively. northwestern site an intermediate 0.6 vegetation type with forest 2.4 limited sample presented shows gorillas are widespread common Congo, even forests previously considered unsuitable as habitat. It is probable holds largest population Africa after Gabon. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
