Glacier changes in the Garhwal Himalaya, India, from 1968 to 2006 based on remote sensing

摘要: Glacier outlines are mapped for the upper Bhagirathi and Saraswati/Alaknanda basins of Garhwal Himalaya using Corona Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) satellite images acquired in 1968 2006, respectively. A subset glaciers was also Landsat TM 1990. area decreased from 599.9 ± 15.6 km2 (1968) to 572.5 18.0 (2006), a loss 4.6 2.8%. Glaciers basin lost 18.4 9.0 (5.7 2.7%) 7.7 (3.3 2.8%), respectively, 2006. Himalayan glacier retreat rates lower than previously reported. More recently (1990–2006), recession have increased. The number study region increased 82 88 2006 due fragmentation glaciers. Smaller ( 50 km2) which 2.8 2.7% (0.074 0.071 % a−1). From debris-covered by 17.8 3.1% (0.46 0.08% a−1) 11.8 3.0% (0.31 basin. Climate records Mukhim (∼1900 m a.s.l.) Bhojbasa (∼3780 meteorological stations were used analyze climate conditions trends, but data too limited make firm conclusions regarding glacier–climate interactions.
