摘要: Abstract Purpose: To identify predictors of smoking onset and cessation between early (age 13 years) late adolescence 18 young adulthood 23 years). Methods: We employed logistic regression to predict initiation for an ethnically diverse sample 3056 adolescents recruited from 30 West Coast schools in 1985 observed age years. Fifty-six percent the was female. Predictors tapping sociodemographic characteristics, environmental influences, attitudes beliefs about smoking, bonds with school, problem behavior were measured at years (older teenager models) (young adult models). Results: Robust both across two developmental periods included doing poorly middle/high school prior behavior. common three four models being one's grade cohort intending smoke next 6 months. Early deviant drinking fostered among older teenagers, but as did not initiation. Smokers who had few or no high friends smoked felt able resist prosmoking pressures more likely quit by Being female predicted years; African-American, Hispanic, Asian inhibited it. Conclusions: The strong association intentions later status adults underscores importance starting prevention continuing it through school. Such programs might also consider greater vulnerability females, youth are their cohort, those
