Excess mortality among children discharged from hospital after treatment for diarrhoea in rural Bangladesh

摘要: Five hundred and fifty one children aged between 3 months years were followed up at home for 12 after treatment of diarrhoea in a rural centre the International Centre Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. During follow found to have significantly higher mortality than generally observed community. The first three discharge appeared be crucial, some 70% deaths occurring that period. Severely malnourished (nutritional state below 56% American National Center Health Statistics (NCHS) standard weight age ratio) had risk death 14 times their well nourished counterparts 66% or more NCHS standard). highest occurred 2 year olds, severely dying compared with 10 moderately malnourished. This pattern was not seen under years. Immediate priority should given providing nutritional rehabilitation who contract diarrhoea.
