Discourse, deficit and identity: Aboriginality, the race paradigm and the language of representation in contemporary Australia

摘要: Deficit discourse is expressed in a mode of language that consistently frames Aboriginal identity narrative deficiency. It interwoven with notions 'authenticity', which turn adhere to models still embedded within the race paradigm, suffering from all its constraints but perniciously benefiting tenacity. Recent work shows deficit surrounding Aboriginality intricately entwined and across different sites representation, policy expression, active both outside Indigenous Australia. thus appears exhibit characteristics what Foucault has termed discursive formation, analysis requires multi-disciplinary approach. Developing research overseas on prevalence social impact indicates significant link between indigeneity outcomes for indigenous peoples. However, while there emerging this field education, as well growing understanding related behaviours such lateral violence, influence significantly under-theorised little understood Australian context. This article will problematise issues explore theory methods change.
