Newspaper reporting of homicide-suicide and mental illness

摘要: Aims and method To explore the portrayal of homicide-suicide in newspaper articles, particularly how mental illness was reported. We carried out a qualitative study England Wales (2006-2008). Data from articles obtained via LexisNexis database were used to examine consecutive series 60 cases. Results A fascination with extreme violence, vulnerable victims having someone blame made homicide-suicides newsworthy. Some offenders portrayed stereotypical manner pejorative language describe illness. The findings showed evidence inaccurate speculative reference disorder reports. Clinical implications media should avoid speculation on people's state. Accurate reporting is essential reduce stigma illness, which may turn encourage people seek help if they experience similar emotional distress.
