摘要: Computational methods are affecting a paradigm change for using microstructure–property relationships within materials and structures engineering. This chapter examines the emergent use of quantitative computational tools microstructure–property–design relationships, primarily structural alloys. Three major phases described as historical “serial paradigm,” current “integrated engineering” and, future “virtual systems” emerging from advances in multiscale modeling. The latter two bring unique demands integrating microstructure representations, constitutive descriptions, numerical codes, experimental methods. Importantly, these approaches forcing fundamental restructuring data engineering wherein centers on hierarchy model parameterizations validations, rather than application-specific design limits. Examining aspects research microstructure-sensitive single-crystal turbine blades provides an accessible glimpse into their requirements. Finally, brief descriptions set context interrelationships remaining chapters book.
