摘要: In the United States, 1.1-1.5% of children have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), corresponding to a 30% increase in incidence and prevalence. Social communication impairments are main signs symptoms ASD, currently available medications ineffective reducing these core deficits. Observational studies indicated that ASD tend show improved cognition behavior after febrile illness, which is associated alteration metabolic pathways, leading cellular stress responses increased expression heat shock proteins (Hsps). Sulforaphane hydroxytyrosol, phytochemicals derived from cruciferous vegetables extra virgin olive oil, respectively, can induce effects similar those produced by fever. Thus, modulation endogenous defense mechanisms may be an innovative approach for therapeutic intervention other neuroinflammation neurodegeneration. This Review introduces hormetic dose-response concept presents possible applications neuroprotection. We address emerging role Hsps neuroprotective network redox stress-responsive propose potential utility nutritional antioxidants sulforaphane hydroxytyrosol against particular ASD. argue such research findings must approached pragmatism prudence. It vital capitalize on recent ongoing investments brain science refine neuroscientific knowledge capability more accurate diagnosis safe, effective, ethically sound treatment neuropsychiatric disorders. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
