Managing drug shortages: seven years' experience at one health system.

摘要: A health system's experience in monitoring drug shortages since 1996 within the organization and 2001 on a national level is described. Since January 1996, Drug Information Service (DIS) at University of Utah Hospitals Clinics (UUHSC) has systematically prepared written bulletins to affected practitioners when occurred. The DIS began providing information American Society Health-System Pharmacists 2001. total 224 were tracked from June 2002. All UUHSC also shortages, but only about two thirds UUHSC. most common reasons for manufacturing problems (28%) product discontinuation (20%). frequently represented pharmacologic-therapeutic categories central nervous system agents (24%) serums, toxoids, vaccines (17%). Of 119 2001, 70 (59%) still ongoing as end potential safety that clinicians might be unfamiliar with alternative agent (54%) alternative's dosage requirement was different (50%). Over half cost neutral, assessment did not include substantial indirect costs. Detailed collected by service indicated trend toward more frequent shortages.
