摘要: Background: Total mesorectal excision (TME) and use of adjuvant radiotherapy are major advances in the treatment rectal cancer that have emerged past 20 years. The aim this study was to evaluate effects an initiative teach TME technique on outcomes at 5 years after surgery. Methods: TME-based surgery introduced Stockholm 1994. population comprised all 447 patients who underwent abdominal operations for County during 1995 1996. Outcomes were compared with those I (790 patients) II (542 trials. Results: The permanent stoma rate reduced from 60·3 55·3 per cent trials respectively 26·5 project (P < 0·001). Five-year local recurrence rates decreased 21·9 19·1 8·2 cancer-specific survival increased 66·0 65·7 77·3 (hazard ratio 0·62 (95 confidence interval 0·49 0·80); P 0·001). Conclusion: A surgical teaching programme had a impact outcome. Copyright © 2004 British Journal Surgery Society Ltd. Published by John Wiley & Sons,
