Trade Induced Technical Change? The Impact of Chinese Imports on Innovation, IT and Productivity

摘要: We examine the impact of Chinese import competition on broad measures technical change—patenting, IT, and TFP—using new panel data across twelve European countries from 1996 to 2007. In particular, we establish that absolute volume innovation increases within firms most affected by imports in their output markets. correct for endogeneity using removal product-specific quotas following China's entry into World Trade Organization 2001. led increased change reallocated employment between towards more technologically advanced firms. These effects were about equal magnitude, account 14% technology upgrading over 2000–7 (and even when allow offshoring China). Rising also falls share unskilled workers. contrast low-wage nations like China, developed had no significant effect innovation.
