摘要: • Severely constipated children with encopresis in whom outpatient management has failed frequently require several days of hospitalization, as well conventional treatments involving cathartics and enemas. A balanced electrolyte solution the nonabsorbable polymer polyethylene glycol (GoLytely, Braintree [Mass] Laboratories Inc) offers a safe efficient method for clearing intestine. Twenty-four patients mean age 8.1 years (range, 0.8 to 17.6 years) an average weight 31.5 kg received glycolelectrolyte solution: eight were given it treatment severe fecal retention unresponsive management; other 16 being prepared colonoscopy. Weight, complete blood cell count, serum electrolyte, urea nitrogen, creatinine levels measured before administration two hours afterward. Abdominal roentgenograms obtained from encopretic patients. The groups comparable weight. Polyethylene glycol-electrolyte was at rate 14 40 mLmL/Kg/h until clear fluid excreted through rectum. Intestines cleaned out successfully all patients, side effects minimal. Children required 11.8 L (574 mL/kg) over 22.5 hours, while needed only 4.0 (128 7.5 hours. Weight did not change significantly any patient. hematocrit decreased (0.38 0.36 [37.6% 35.8%]) nitrogen level undergoing colonoscopy (3.6 2.0 mmol/L [10 8 mg/dL]). ( AJDC 1988;142:340-342)
