This exemplified developmental patterning, which roots and shoots rapidly elongate while simultaneously giving rise to precisely positioned new organs over a time course of minutes hours. In this Review, we emphasize the insights gained from simultaneous use live imaging transient perturbation technologies capture properties plant processes.
