摘要: We review the knowledge base for biotechnology in South Africa light of government interventions aimed at establishing a industry. use bibliometric methods to analyse data from ISI database on performance microbiology, genetics and molecular biology research over 20-year period 1980 2000. Genetics publications have seen steady decline while microbiology has steadily increased its share world publications. Although quantity is small relative impact factor suggests that quality these disciplines comparable output. conclude lack adequate output poses threat policies investment increasing commercialisation.
