摘要: Abstract This paper reviews the changing textile flammability research themes within author's group over last 35 years and which reflect those of academic communities often influenced by industrial societal pressures. For instance, ignition studies undertaken in early 1980s together with effect fabric structural variables reflected contemporaneous interests as well related to real hazards posed, for example, nightwear fabrics. Also, work study flame retardant mechanisms, especially on cotton substrates, need commercial more fully understand their chemical treatments largely developed during 1960–1970 period. During subsequent 1980 period, ecotoxicological concerns regarding retardants general started develop continue even greater vigour at present time. Thus effort focussed developing low or zero formaldehyde alternatives bromine-based back-coatings applied furnishing fabrics also promoted interest novel intumescents. By 1990s, demonstration potential nanocomposite polymers improved fire performance raised possibility developments environmental sustainability. More recently, nanotechnological engineering fibre surfaces promote substrate retardancy has created a significant literature. In conclusion, it is evident that while most this scientific knowledge, its translation into opportunity been elusive will probably remain case we move next ten so where challenges reducing apparent properties textiles remain.
