摘要: Abstract The distribution of sediment type and benthic communities in the central eastern English Channel is shown to be polarised around a distinctive local hydrodynamic feature. seabed region includes an extensive area gravel substrate which both important habitat for marine fauna valuable source material aggregate industry. Effective management predicated on understanding whether it represents single homogeneous unit, or several different units that may need managed ways. aim this study was provide information would inform such decisions. Spatial patterns habitats were studied by investigating physical environment through modelled empirical data, infauna epifauna along east-west trending transect. A common spatial pattern observed biological parameters, but rather than indicating simple longitudinal gradient, there distinct polarisation feature, bedload parting (BLP) zone situated between Isle Wight Cotentin peninsula. Sediments at western ends transect more similar each other those middle. strong regime BLP controls distribution, transporting finer material, mainly sand, away from mid area. sand content mirrors magnitude potential transport, complex due interplay M2 M4 tidal constituents produced series erosional depositional zones. structure reflected conditions, with sponges among stable substrates stronger currents characterised area, while became diverse towards where mobile. We conclude should not considered as unit purposes, despite its apparent uniformity contemporary maps.
