摘要: Abstract Background Owing to recent discoveries of many hydrogen sulfide-mediated physiological processes, sulfide biology is in the focus scientific research. However, promiscuous chemical properties pose complications for biological studies, which led accumulation controversial observations literature. Scope review We intend provide an overview fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic features redox- coordination-chemical reactions protonation equilibria relation its functions. In light these we strengths limitations most commonly used detection methods recently developed fluorescent probes. also give a personal perspective on blood tissue measurements based proposed biomolecule–sulfide interactions point out important aspects handling reagent solutions. Major conclusions The diverse chemistries resulted orders magnitude differences measured levels. Investigations that were aimed dissect underlying molecular reasons responsible controversies made recognition there are large reserves systems. These pools tightly regulated dynamic manner they likely play major role regulation endogenous-sulfide-mediated functions avoiding toxic side effects. General significance Working with challenging, because it requires considerable amounts knowledge adequately handle solutions interpret observations. Therefore, propose rigorous approach could aid reconciliation increasing number biology.
