摘要: Aging is associated with structural changes in skeletal muscles. One such change loss of muscle mass. Muscle fiber atrophy another transformation. selective to type II fibers. The reduced mass aging muscles has functional consequences like performance daily activities. Although exercise can be used hypertrophy fibers, it requires high intensity training that may not feasible for elderly people. Due the ability neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) activate at relatively low compared voluntary exercises, NMES might an alternative method train fibers population. purpose test effectiveness performed same inducing quadriceps subjects. aims are 1) compare hypertrophy, 2) power output, and 3) Compare performance-based tests subjects who receive those isometric strengthening level. Twenty (71.2 +/- 4.41) were randomized or exercise. Computed tomography (CT), biopsy assess cross sectional area (CSA) types quadriceps. Isokinetic based measured strength physical function. The patterns from pre post on total CSA, lean IIA CSA significantly higher group. There was no difference between groups isokinetic power. ramp NMES exercises older adults. NMES induced improvements differences scores.
