摘要: For one hundred years the drama of Shakespeare's contemporaries has been consistently represented in anthologies, edited texts, and critical tradition by a familiar group about two dozen plays running from Kyd's Spanish Tragedy to Ford's 'Tis Pity She's Whore way Dekker, Jonson, Middleton Webster. How was this canon created, what ideological institutional functions does it serve? What preceded it, is possible for become something else? Jeremy Lopez takes up these questions tracing history anthologies 'non-Shakespearean' Robert Dodsley's Select Collection Old Plays (1744) through those recently published Blackwell, Norton, Routledge. Containing dozens short, provocative readings unfamiliar plays, book will benefit who seek broader sense period's dazzling array forms.
