Geological repositories: scientific priorities and potential high-technology transfer from the space and physics sectors

摘要: The use of underground geological repositories, such as in radioactive waste disposal (RWD) and carbon capture (widely known Carbon Capture Storage; CCS), constitutes a key environmental priority for the 21st century. Based on identification scientific questions relating to geophysics, geochemistry geobiology geodisposal wastes, this paper describes possibility technology transfer from high-technology areas space exploration sector, including astrobiology, planetary sciences, astronomy, also particle nuclear physics, into geodisposal. Synergies exist between high used sector characterization environments because common objectives with respect instrument miniaturization, low power requirements, durability under extreme conditions (in temperature mechanical loads) operation remote or otherwise difficult access environments.
