Communicating honestly so that they may participate in decisionmaking is recent, rather than historical, imperative. Based on respect for patients, this cooperative physician-patient relationship reverses time-honored paternalism that, since Hippocratic times, has guided physician interactions patients. In article, Cowan et al 1 imply emergency should get consent before administration of intravenous radiographic contrast material. To assess claim, we first must review background for, methods of, obtaining consent.
