摘要: We study ‘surface switching’ quantitatively in flows driven by the constant rotationof endwall of an open cylindrical vessel reported Suzuki, Iima & Hayase(Phys. Fluids, vol. 18, 2006, p. 101701): deformed free surface switches betweenaxisymmetric and non-axisymmetric shapes accompanied irregular verticaloscillation. Detailed simultaneous measurements showed that magnitude thevelocity fluctuations (turbulent intensity) temporally varies greatly are stronglycorrelated with height, suggesting dynamic switching between laminarand turbulent states is vessel-scale shape changes. The studyalso identified clear hysteresis intensity arising from changes theReynolds number; bifurcation diagram consists two overlapping branchesrepresenting a high-intensity (turbulent) state low-intensity (laminar) state.Based on results, mechanism suggested.
