摘要: To determine whether it is appropriate to perform urgent exploratory sternotomy for potentially life-threatening complications of open-heart procedures, the authors reviewed charts 100 such patients managed by between December 1982 and 1984. Group 1 comprised 32 who suffered cardiac arrest (8) or had acute profound hypotension (24). 2 included 68 with persistent excessive bleeding. Of group operated because hypotension, 50% definite evidence tamponade. In remainder cause was severe myocardial ischemia left ventricular failure. an identifiable correctable site bleeding found in 78%. Four 8 20 (83%) 24 survived hospital. 2, 58 (85%) survived. The mean postoperative stay higher than 2-20.3 +/- 3.08 days versus 14.2 1.23 (p less 0.1). duration ventilatory support also - 6.18 1.32 2.12 0.38 days. Postoperatively, sputum cultures gave positive results 19% patients, all whom required prolonged support. Minor sternal wound infections were present two major four. There no significant difference morbidity survivors those underwent recovery room operating room.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
