Data were extracted provide an overview what is known about topic, highlight gaps literature, explore current knowledge prevention. Studies included assessed methodological quality Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network checklist. Most available research evidence comes from upper-middle-income countries, only 22% lower-middle-income low-income countries. focused on alcohol while neglecting such as opioids, sedatives, stimulants, misuse medication, inhalants, hallucinogens. employed cross-sectional design, conducted within risk-factor paradigm, provided little information potential interaction variables. Public policy should take account fact that: potentially modifiable risk factor; assessment management integral care at-risk patients; reducing consumption hazardous prevention; needs be expanded include more theory driven that focuses dimensions, employing sophisticated statistical methods.
