ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY AND THE WELLBEING OF CHILDREN

摘要: There are many reasons for believing that the environment exerts an influence (directly or indirectly) on wellbeing of children and families. However, while clear evidence is available low socioeconomic status associated with lower than average levels wellbeing, especially among adults, linking social emotional adjustment quality patchy equivocal. In this paper we focus three family environment: street, home neighborhood. Neighborhood was measured by Vinson-Homel problems index, street-type as residential commercial/retail, housing in terms upkeep, floor occupied, availability playspace occupancy type. The research hypothesis after allowing community selection processes living environments would be less satisfied various areas their lives, experience more negative emotions, have restricted positive friendship patterns. sample comprised 321 families which included a 9–11 year old child, drawn from 18 neighborhoods Sydney. problem score street-type, some aspects housing, predicted adjustment. Before controls composition, class culture, commercial streets, particularly inner-city areas, stood out all others feelings loneliness, dislike other rejection, worry, fear, anger unhappiness. Children high showed pattern constriction rather maladjustment. These results suggest not simply but genuine socialization effects. Possible sources of, mechanisms for, these effects suggested.
