摘要: When depicted on maps as homogenous territorial wholes, ancient states are visually summarized static entities in a way that conceals the highly fluid dynamics of polity formation, maintenance, and growth. Models derived from studies animal behavior show “territory” does not consist an undifferentiated use landscape. Instead, concept territory can be parsed into series resource-rich nodes linked by corridors access, surrounded unutilized regions boundaries marked at points competition. Ancient human groups also analyzed having perceived occupied landscapes through strategies flexible networks which were spaces around selectively identified defended. This strategy is identifiable social different levels complexity ranging hunter-gatherers chiefdoms states. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Complexity 12: 28–35,
