摘要: The conservation of marine benthic biodiversity is a recognised goal number national and international programs such as the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). In order to attain this goal, information needed about distribution life in ocean so that spatial measures protected areas (MPAs) can be designed maximise protection within boundaries acceptable dimensions. Ideally, map would produced showed enable efficient design MPAs. dilemma maps do not exist for most it possible at present predict all using sparse biological currently available. Knowledge geomorphology biogeography seafloor has improved markedly over past 10 years. Using multibeam sonar, ecology submarine features fjords, sand banks, coral reefs, seamounts, canyons, mud volcanoes spreading ridges been revealed unprecedented detail. This book provides synthesis seabed habitats based recent, up-to-date information. Introductory chapters explain drivers underpin need habitat maps, including threats health, mapping approach principles (geomorphic) classification schemes. Case studies from around world are then presented. They represent range where detailed bathymetric have combined with video sampling yield an integrated picture communities associated different types habitat. final chapter examines critical knowledge gaps future directions research. Reviews compares methodologies being used Includes global case Provides geological expertise into what traditionally discipline.
