摘要: Obesity, defined as excessive fat accumulation that may impair health, has been described throughout human history, but it now reached epidemic proportions with the WHO estimating 39% of world’s adults over 18 years age were overweight or obese in 2016. Obesity is a chronic low-grade inflammatory state leading to organ damage an increased risk common diseases including cardiovascular and metabolic disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver osteo-arthritis some cancers. This be influenced by adipose tissue hypoxia changes gut microbiota. There increasing focus on functional foods nutraceuticals treatment options for obesity drug treatments are limited efficacy. chapter summarises importance anthocyanin-containing fruits vegetables, coffee its components, tropical fruit food waste sources phytochemicals treatment. We emphasise preclinical studies can form basis clinical trials determine effectiveness these humans.
