Museums between Private and Public the Case of the Beyeler Museum in Basle

摘要: In Europe, ever more private museums are now entering the field. This paper investigates behavior of one these museums, using an institutional approach cultural economics. The Beyeler museum in Basle, Switzerland, is a privately founded art with extraordinary collection works. Though less than five years old, it acknowledged to be most successful Switzerland terms number visitors. However, not completely but receives public support. We analyze how this influences museum's behavior: (1) directorate stays away from market its as institutions do. (2) embarks on self-propelling process concerning special exhibitions, therewith losing some uniqueness. (3) Concerning visitors' amenities, differences between and emerge lesser extent expected according theory.
